Serve the Shore

Serving Our Neighbors on the Eastern Shore
At Holmes Presbyterian Church, worship naturally leads us outward. Our calling is not only to gather in God’s presence but also to share Christ’s love with our neighbors—young and old, near and far.
The Eastern Shore is our home, and we are committed to serving this community with gratitude, compassion, and steady faithfulness.
Below are some of the ways we put our faith into action throughout the year.

Food Baskets for ESCC & Local Social Services
Each Sunday, members bring nonperishable food items to fill the baskets near the sanctuary doors. These gifts are delivered to the Eastern Shore Community College food pantry and to Northampton County social services, helping to support individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. This simple, ongoing ministry is one of the most tangible ways we care for our neighbors.
St. Andrew Gleaning & Harvest of Hope
Holmes participates in the work of St. Andrew Gleaning and Harvest of Hope, efforts that gather surplus produce from local farms so it can be shared with food banks and hunger-relief organizations. Members join in picking, collecting, and loading crops—partnering with local growers to make sure nothing goes to waste and more people are fed.

Prison Ministry
For many years, members of Holmes have supported a local prison ministry, offering encouragement, prayer, and connection to those who are incarcerated. This ministry reflects our belief that God’s grace reaches every life and that hope can grow even in difficult places.
Care for Rehab Center Residents
The Presbyterian Women of Holmes visit regional or local rehab and extended care facilities each month, bringing activities, conversation, and a ministry of presence. These visits offer companionship and joy to individuals who appreciate being remembered and included by the wider community.
Seasonal Ministries of Care
Throughout the year, Holmes shares small but meaningful gifts of care with members and neighbors:
-
Christmas caroling for those who can no longer attend in person
-
Valentine’s treat plates delivered to shut-ins and “special people” in the congregation
-
Cards, prayers, and personal visits coordinated through Membership Care
These ministries remind our community that no one is forgotten and that God’s love shows up in everyday acts of kindness.

Why We Serve
Our service is grounded in gratitude for all God has given us and in the belief that we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves. Through food, companionship, prayer, and shared work, we seek to reflect the compassion of Christ on the Shore we call home.
If you would like to learn more or get involved in one of these ministries, we would be glad to help you find a place to serve.
